On Sunday, the new Wal-Mart Supercenter off U.S. 301 in Middletown received a telephoned bomb threat. While no incendiary devices were found on the premises, Middletown Police Chief Hank Tobin said police are searching for the perpetrator, who could be charged with a felony for the threat.
“It’s something that’s very serious,” Tobin said.
Tobin said the store received the threat around 11:30 a.m. when a store employee answered the phone. The employee heard a voice say there was a bomb in the store, then hang up. The building was evacuated of both customers and employees and the Middletown Police were dispatched to the area to assist with the evacuation and take further action. The officers searched the area and New Castle County K-9s trained in sniffing out bombs were also sent, but no bombs or other incendiary devices were found on the premises.
Tobin said no additional threats have been made to the store.
“At this point, we believe it’s just a prank call,” Tobin said.
He said no arrests have been made and the police currently do not have suspects. However, the investigation remains active and the department is pursuing all leads.
