A Middletown man is facing charges after totaling his car Aug. 17 while driving under the influence on Cedar Lane Road at The Legends neighborhood.
At 1:42 a.m., Middletown Police responded to the area of Cedar Lane Road and East Whittington Way in The Legends neighborhood for a report of a single-vehicle collision.
Upon arrival, MPD Officer Sung Choi located a 1988 BMW 528 in the entrance to the golf cart underpass that crosses below Cedar Lane Road. The operator of the vehicle, Hezekiah Johnson, 26, of the 100 block of Betsy Rawls Drive, Middletown, was being tended to by the members of the Volunteer Hose Company of Middletown. Johnson was transported to the Christiana Hospital Emergency Room, where he was treated and released.
Preliminary results of MPD’s investigation revealed that Johnson was traveling northbound on Cedar Lane Road when his vehicle left the east side of the roadway. The vehicle remained on the grassy area of the shoulder for approximately 250 feet, until it crossed the eastbound lane of East Whittington. The vehicle next struck the raised median separating the traffic lanes of Whittington Way, where it became airborne.
MPD said the vehicle struck the railing that runs along the top of the cart path tunnel, and then came to rest within the eastern entrance of the tunnel. The collision caused damage to Town of Middletown electrical equipment and a Frog Hollow Golf Course safety railing.
Johnson received non life-threatening injuries. He was charged with driving under the influence, driving with a suspended / revoked license, inattentive driving and not having a valid license. He was released pending his arraignment Friday, Sept. 3.
