The Town of Middletown’s Levels Road Park isn’t finished yet, but on Wednesday, little dogs, big dogs and their owners got their first chance to play there when the dog park section opened to the public.
“We wanted to open it because there are some nice days left in the year,” said Kristen Krenzer, public relations officer for the Town of Middletown.
The 8-acre dog park is fenced and split into two sections. A 5 acres area is marked for large dogs. The other area is 3 acres and marked for small dogs. Krenzer said there is no official weight limit, and whether the dog belongs in the large or small section is up to the owner’s discretion.
Krenzer said the park was based on other dog parks throughout the country and provides an open, fenced space for dogs and their owners to play.
“[Dogs] can be taken off their leash and just run and play Frisbee and play ball,” Krenzer said.
She said before the park was open, residents were looking forward to the park.
“We’ve been getting lots of emails and calls asking when the dog park is going to be open,” Krenzer said.
Middletown’s 100-acre Levels Road Park has been under construction since February 2007. When complete, it will feature a walking trail, pavilions, a baseball diamond, playgrounds and sport fields. The park also includes a man-made pond with a pier.
Krenzer said the construction will continue on the rest of the park through the winter season.
“As long as the weather is nice, they’re going to keep going,” she said.
Krenzer said the town hopes to hold a grand opening for the complete park in spring 2009. She said there are no tentative dates, but community organizations, including ones for dogs, have expressed interest and should be involved.
She said residents can get to the dog park by entering through the entrance on the west side of Levels Road. After they enter the main driveway, they can find the park adjacent to the first parking area on the right.
“We’re really excited to open this to the community and we hope everyone enjoys it,” Krenzer said.
Park hours are from dawn to dusk.
