With every new school year comes book reports, science experiments, math quizzes and report cards, and as students settle into their first week of school, Middletown resident Jonathon Peters offers a new option for parents with children who may be struggling.
Peters, who is working on his master’s degree in education, opened Tutor Doctor Delaware in early June. The one-on-one tutoring service offers help for students of all grade levels in all subjects.
“My main goal is to make a difference in the lives of children, and to help them when they’re struggling with reading, writing, math or any other subject,” he said.
Tutor Doctor Delaware is a franchise of the national company Tutor Doctor, which has more than 200 locations in the United States and Canada.
Peters said he currently employs 13 tutors that range from certified teachers to students from area colleges.
“When I look to hire tutors, I look for people who like kids and who want to make a difference in the lives of students,” he said.
Peters said after a free consultation with the child and parents, the student is given a tutor that can best address the specific skill sets that are lacking or missing, and then the students are tutored in their own home.
“I really like the one-on-one aspect of this type of tutoring,” he said. “It’s in the children’s own environment, which makes it easier for them to learn.”
Peters said his service benefits not only the student, but the entire family.
“We want to ease the parents’ tension, “ he said. “By having an independent person come in, it can make the situation a whole lot easier and less stressful.”
Peters said he hopes parents take advantage of tutoring when it is available because it can help a student succeed.
“When you start to fall behind, you have to catch up to develop those skill areas or you’ll start missing key foundations,” he said. “If you don’t get it, you can’t build on it. One-on-one tutoring makes a real difference in restoring those foundations.”
