Everyone who works at Accent Music knows music.
That’s probably why the locally owned store has been voted the best music store in Delaware more than ten times over the past two decades.
Last December, the store’s owner of 23 years Steve Harkey decided it was time to expand his business by opening a third store in Middletown.
When customers would come into Accent Music stores on Kirkwood Highway and Concord Pike, they would give the cashier their zip codes.
“We saw that people were driving up there from Middletown,” said Middletown store manager Drew Keane, a student at the University of Delaware.
Keane, who has been playing drums for 14 years, worked at Harkey’s Kirkwood Highway store as an assistant manager before helping his boss open their new location.
He says he has the perfect job.
“It’s every musicians dream to do something with music,” Keane said.
Accent Music sells just about any instrument, accessories, and sheet music and will be offering lessons once the nine practice rooms in the back of the shop are renovated.
“We provide everything they need,” Keane said.
Harkey has a faculty of 40 music teachers between his three stores who teach all types of instruments, including the banjo and mandolin.
He says he also has one of the largest selections of sheet music in the state.
Two walls in the Middletown store are lined with racks of sheet music, with selections ranging from the Forest Gump score, to Pink Floyd and even a book of selections from the popular video game, Guitar Hero.
“We cater to the whole music community,” he said.
At Accent Music’s Kirkwood store, there is a built-in 150-seat venue and a professional studio that musicians can rent out to use.
The Middletown employees are already enjoying their new spot.
Harkey says it’s relaxed.
“The people are really nice,” he said.
Harkey and Keane have already been talking with the town of Middletown about getting involved in its music-related events like Music on Main and Rocktoberfest.
“We plan to get involved with all town music events.”
