On June 29, detectives from the Delaware State Police Major Crimes Unit arrested Middletown High School business teacher Robert R. Schumacher, 39, of Clayton, for 10 counts of fourth-degree rape.
Through an investigation, it was revealed that Schumacher befriended a then 17-year-old female student in late 2005. The victim soon became a babysitter at the Schumacher residence and their relationship eventually turned physical. It has been alleged that sexual encounters took place between the two primarily at Schumacher’s home, but also once at school in a classroom. Their relationship lasted approximately seven months.
The victim decided to come forward several months ago and reported the incident. After an exhaustive investigation, warrants were completed and Schumacher voluntarily turned himself in to authorities. He was released after posting a $25,000 secured bond.
Schumacher also is an advisor for the MHS Business Professionals of American Chapter and the Business, Finance, Marketing and Technology career pathway at the school.
Appoquinimink School District Superintendent Dr. Tony Marchio stated in an email message that Schumacher remains employed with the district for now.
