The 16th Annual Olde Tyme Peach Festival sponsored by the Middletown Historical Society is just around the corner. Mark your calendars for Saturday, Aug. 15, when the streets of Middletown fill with a parade, vendors, food booths, games, rides, musical talent, historical displays and re-enactments.
The parade starts at 9 a.m., with the other activities slated for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. All events and transportation are free, thanks to grants received from the Town of Middletown and New Castle County Councilman Bill Powers.
The Peach Festival committee has been meeting every month since January, but will start more frequent meetings starting Monday, June 29. New this year is the ability to accept vendor registration and payments online through PayPal. So far there are at least 92 vendors. Sign-ups for the parade organized by Connie Miller are available at middletownde-hist.org.
The Middletown Historical Society building, located at 216 N. Broad St., will feature the permanent display of peach farming history upstairs, and their current exhibit on “Middletonians Go to School” downstairs. The society also will offer a scoop of free peach ice cream to all visitors. A blacksmith, a spinner and a weaver will demonstrate outside near the Old Academy Building. The Civil War Re-enactors organized by Linda and Abby Harting will feature an 1876-style picnic and a Soldier’s Aid Society theme. The Hartings are also hoping to have a quilt show at Grace Church on Pennington Street.
T-shirts this year will be blue and will show Wende Greene’s sketch featuring “Chopper Charlie’s” Towne barber shop and Buckworth’s Hardware. Cheryl Shields is organizing several musical venues, including the newly re-opened Everett Theatre.
The committee needs more volunteer help, especially on the day itself.
To volunteer, call co-chairs Brian Rickards at (302) 218-4708 or Dave Matsen at (302) 740-5845.
