Barbara Lynn Foraker of New Castle passed away Sunday, June 6, 2010, at her family’s cottage on the Bohemia River in Earleville, Md., surrounded by her family. She was 51.
Ms. Foraker was born Aug. 12, 1958, in Wilmington.
She was a 1976 graduate of William Penn High School in New Castle, where she lead the Colonials to two state championships in her senior year in fast pitch softball and in basketball. She was a 1981 graduate the University of Delaware with a degree in political science and economics. While at UD, she was a member of the varsity basketball and softball teams, and continues to hold the record for most triples hit in a game. She also earned a degree from Goldey-Beacom Business College in 1982.
Ms. Foraker went on to sell both commercial and residential real estate in Washington, D.C., for several years before returning to Delaware to join the family business, Foraker Oil, which she owned and operated until the time of her death.
She was a great lover of the outdoors, enjoying boating on the Bohemia River, Chesapeake Bay and longer voyages up and down the Atlantic Coast. She was Commodore of the B.L.F. Yacht Club, an exclusive club of like-minded boating enthusiasts.
She had a wide circle of very close and devoted friends, dating from her childhood to the days of her ownership of The Beach House Bar and Restaurant in Rehoboth. She enjoyed traveling with her family and friends, including trips to Prague, Berlin, Amsterdam, Italy and throughout the United States.
Ms. Foraker was a huge animal lover. As a child she would accompany her father to local dog training sessions and field trials. After college she continued her love of the sport. Throughout her life, she owned/co-owned and handled 10 dogs for hunt test and field trialing. She was instrumental in molding a breeding program that for six generations could boast more than “1000 lifetime points” and “Master Hunter” status.
She was preceded in death by Chip, her Labrador Retriever.
She is survived by her partner, Susanne Salkind of New Castle; a daughter, Helen Abigail Salkind-Foraker of New Castle; her beloved parents, Warner T. “Pete” and Barbara Gail Foraker of Delaware City and Bonita Springs, Fla.; a brother and a daughter-in-law, Warner T. “Todd” Jr. and Salle Foraker of St Augustine Beach, Fla.; a nephew, Warner T. “Tyler” Foraker III of St Augustine Beach; a niece, Sarah Gail Foraker of St Augustine Beach, Fla.; four cousins, Pam and Vance Gray of Bear, and Kevin and Yvonne Camac of Middletown; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins; beloved dogs Mercy, Lily and Captain; and a pack of devoted friends who never left her side.
Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday, June 10, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, where friends may call two hours earlier.
Burial will be in Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society, 92 Read’s Way, Suite 205, New Castle, DE 19720.
