Sidney J. ‘Sid’ Baker Jr. of Middletown passed away Thursday, Aug. 26, 2010, at his home. He was 84.
Mr. Baker was born Sept. 26, 1925, in Middletown, son of the late Alice Naylor and Sidney John Baker Sr.
At the age of 18, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he proudly served his country during World War II.
He was a lifelong resident of Middletown who embarked on a career with Chicago Bridge and Iron Company, from where he retired after 15 years. In 1974, Mr. Baker joined A-Del, Delaware heavy civil construction company in New Castle County founded by his son, Barry, that year. He worked as a mechanic, where he devoted 34 years of service before retiring in 2008. Barry’s son, Jon, later joined the business and together the three – father, son, and grandson, continued to work together to provide exceptional service to A-Del’s clients.
Mr. Baker enjoyed working in his vegetable garden when his health permitted, and always retained a love for working in his flower garden. His warm heart and friendly smile will be missed by many, especially his family.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Elizabeth Cross.
He leaves many wonderful memories to his loving wife of nearly 61 years, Gladys (Wilson) Baker; a dedicated son and a daughter-in-law, Barry and Paulette Baker of Middletown; a devoted grandson and a granddaughter-in-law, Jon and Christina of Middletown; a very special and precious great-granddaughter, Emma Baker, who brightened each and every day of his life during the past seven months; and a special sister-in-law, Janet Elliott of Middletown.
Friends may visit from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 30 at Daniels & Hutchison Funeral Home LLC, 212 N. Broad St., Middletown.
Graveside services with military honors will be private at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Memorial and Honor Program, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
Arrangements by Daniels & Hutchison Funeral Home LLC, Middletown.
