    Joseph F. Cahill Jr. of Middletown passed away Sunday, Aug. 23, 2009, at his home. He was 83.
    Mr. Cahill was born and raised in Revere, Mass. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Coast Guard.
    He retired from Diamond State Telephone Co. in 1985 after 38 years.
    Mr. Cahill was a member of the Telephone Pioneers and was also involved with many organizations within his community.
    He was preceded in death by his son, Pat, in 2002.
    He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Alice E. Cahill; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Joseph and Marie Cahill of Newark, Michael and Elizabeth Cahill of New Castle, Tim and Justine Cahill of Townsend and Chris Aiken of Middletown; two daughters and two sons-in-law, Barbara and Bill Hahn of Wilmington, and Kathy and Michael Lams of Denton, Texas; more than 40 grandchildren and great-grandchildren, including two of whom he raised, Pat and Scott Cahill; and a sister and a brother-in-law, Helen and William Whall of N.H.
    Services and burial will be private.
    In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Helen Graham Cancer Center, 4701 Ogletown-Stanton Rd., Suite 1200, Newark, DE 19713.
