Richard W. “Dick” Lambert Sr. of Nokomis, Fla., formerly of Middletown, died Aug. 26, 2010. He was 78.
Mr. Lambert attended Middletown High School and later Goldey Beacom School of Business.
He a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in the Korean Conflict, where he lost both feet and his right hand, becoming Delaware’s first triple amputee. He was awarded the Purple Heart and, in 1965, was the recipient of the national “Outstanding Disabled American Veteran of the Year” award for his numerous accomplishments.
After retiring from the Army at the age of 20, Mr. Lambert owned and operated Lambert’s Gulf Station in Odessa. He began working at the DuPont Company in 1955, from where he retired in 1979 and moved to Florida with his wife.
He was active in his communities and served the Town of Middletown as both councilman and mayor in the early ’70s.
Mr. Lambert was very active in retirement as a licensed charter boat captain, combining his love of boating and fishing. Most recently he enjoyed traveling and camping in their motor home with family and friends.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Louise Sanborn; two sons and two daughters-in-law, Rick and Lynda of Middletown, and Andy and Anne of Bear; two daughters and a son-in-law, Sally and Steve Downs of Claymont, and Nancy Martin of Venice, Fla..; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 8 at Daniels & Hutchison Funeral Home LLC, 212 N. Broad St., Middletown, where friends may call one hour earlier.
Burial with military honors will be in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to TideWell Hospice, Inc., 5955 Rand Boulevard, Sarasota, FL 34238.
