    Howard M. “Poppy” “Smitty” “Ho” Smith of Townsend, formerly of Newark and Clayton, passed away peacefully Friday, July 9, 2010. He was 70.
    Mr. Smith was born in Salem, N.J., son of the late Howard O. and Helen (Potts) Smith.
    He was a 1960 graduate of Woodstown High School.
    He loved his wife, Susan Anne Smith; spending time with his grandson, Joshua Joseph Smith; fishing with the guys; gardening and attending car shows in his 1954 Chevy pickup.
    Mr. Smith was baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Smyrna Aug. 31, 2008. He and Susan were Sealed for All Time and Eternity Sept. 8, 2009, in the Washington, D.C., Temple. Accompanying them were many family members and friends. He enjoyed teaching with the missionaries, visiting other church members and meeting new people. He loved the Lord, the church, the gospel, the members and everyone who he came in contact with, and they all loved him in return. He had immeasurable faith in the Lord and a firm testimony of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and all of its teachings. He loved teaching in Gospel Principles class with Susan.
He lived in Delaware since the late ’80s. He went to work for the Delaware Department of Transportation in 1986, from where he retired in 2002. In 2004, he became a parts delivery driver for NAPA Auto Parts in Middletown.
    In November 2009, Mr. Smith was diagnosed with a rare intestinal cancer, which he fought for eight months. He fought the good fight. His family and friends will miss him very much and will love him forever.
    In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his third wife, Dorothy “Dee” Smith, in 2003; and a brother, Richard Smith, in 2004.
He is survived by his wife of five years, Susan Anne Smith of Townsend; a daughter, Tanya Oliva Smith of Middletown; two sons, Anthony Rob Oliva of Townsend and Keith Smith of New Jersey; a grandson, Joshua Joseph Smith of Middletown; a granddaughter, Ashley Nichole Oliva of Townsend; a sister, Betty Ann Jones of Aberdeen, Md.; a sister-in-law, Elaine Smith of Vineland, N.J.; several nieces, nephews and cousins; all of Howard’s extended family in the church; and his dearest friends.
    Services will be 4 p.m., Wednesday, July 14, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 310 Clark Farm Road, Smyrna, friends may call one hour earlier.
   Burial will be held privately at Lawnside Cemetery in Woodstown, N.J.
    Memorial contributions may be made to the Helen Graham Cancer Center, 4701 Ogletown-Stanton Road, Suite 1200, Newark, DE 19713.
