David S. “Dave” Lawson Sr. of Middletown died after a courageous battle with cancer Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2009, surrounded by his loving family, at Christiana Hospital, Newark. He was 52.
Mr. Lawson was employed by Delmarva Power for 34 years, most recently in the gas construction department.
He was a loving a devoted “Pop-Pop,” a good friend to many and was well known for his love of practical jokes. He also loved sports and coached youth football in the M.O.T area for 12 years, M.O.T Little League for 10 years and the M.O.T Challenger T-Ball program for the past four years. He was known for his endless love for children, wit and, above all, his unique sense of humor.
Mr. Lawson also enjoyed his jaunts to Augustine Beach, traveling, fishing, trips to the beach, the Philadelphia Eagles and the Phillies games, but most of all, spending time with his family.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, James A. and Reba Lawson, and Josephine Andrucyk, all of Sugar Notch, Pa.; and his father-in-law, William Abernathy Sr.
He is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of almost 32 years, Pam (Abernathy) Lawson; a son and a daughter-in-law, Scott and Kimberly Lawson of Smyrna; two daughters and a son-in-law, Kim and Brandon Dowell of Smyrna, and Amy Lawson of Middletown; four grandchildren, Emma, Caraline, Olivia and William; his parents, Jim and Loretta Lawson of New Castle; two brothers and two sisters-in-law, Jim and Barbara Lawson of Cochranville, Pa., and Jeff and Lisa Lawson of Newark; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Lori and Alex Economos of Newark, and Lynn Testaiuti of Newtown Square, Pa.; his mother-in-law, Janet Abernathy of Newark; a sister-in-law, Richele Lawson; two brothers-in-law, Bill Abernathy and his wife, Lisa, and Mike Abernathy and his wife, Cathy, all of Middletown; 10 nephews, Jais Lawson, Jeffrey Lawson, Eric Lawson, Alex Economos, Adam Economos, Ross Testaiuti, Marco Testaiuti, Cole Testaiuti, Mike Abernathy and Gary Abernathy; and four nieces, Kaiti Lawson, Tori Lawson, Sydni Economos and Jordan Abernathy.
Friends may call Sunday, Aug. 30, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Cornerstone United Methodist Church, 3135 Summit Bridge Road, Bear.
Services will be Monday, Aug. 31, at 10 a.m., at the church, where friends may also call one hour earlier.
Burial will be in St. Georges Cemetery.
