Obituary for Charles Wilson Stockly

    Charles Wilson Stockly died Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2010, at Georgetown Memorial Hospital, Georgetown, N.C. He was 86.
    Mr. Stockly was born April 19, 1924, in Wilmington, son of the late Ayres Jacques and Esther Rachel Wilson Stockly.
    He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was the former financial controller for Continental Can Co. He served as a vestryman, Sunday school teacher, committee chairman of Boyscout Troop 94, chairman of the Finance Committee at St. Anne’s Episcopal Church in Middletown, and as vestry of Trinity Church in Elkton, Md. He was a founding board member of Junior Achievement in Wilmington and was instrumental in establishing a 200-mile territorial fishing limit.
    In 1986, Mr. Stockly moved to Georgetown, S.C., and pioneered the clean up of Winyah Bay. He was the 1994 president of the Georgetown Sportfishing Association and a board member for many years. He worked with the Baruch Foundation and N.O.A. to guarantee traditional sport fishing at North Inlet in Georgetown. He was a founding board member of Helping Hands, a member of the Belle Isle Yacht Club, vice-president of the Belle Isle Homeowner’s Association, Treasurer of the Historic Ricefields Association, Inc. and loved hunting, fishing and golf. He also was a member of Prince George, Winyah, Episcopal Church in Georgetown.
    He is survived by his wife, Peggy D. Stockly of Georgetown; a brother, Ayres Holmes Stockly of Falmouth, Maine; and a number of nieces and nephews.
    Services will be Friday, Sept. 10, 2010, at 10 a.m., at Prince George, Winyah, Episcopal Church. The Rev. Paul C. Fuener and the Rt. Rev. C. FitzSimons Allison will officiate. A reception will follow the memorial services in the Church Parrish hall.
    Inurnment will be private.
    The family suggests memorial contributions to Prince George, Winyah, Episcopal Church, Rector’s Discretionary Fund, P.O. Box 674, Georgetown, S.C. 29442; or Historic Ricefields Assoc., Inc. P.O. Box 2129, Georgetown, S.C. 29442.
