If you love to cook and have an awesome recipe for a fresh peach pie, it’s not too late to sign up for the M.O.T. Jean Birch Senior Center’s 15th annual peach pie contest.
The contest takes place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 16, the day of the festival.
A panel of judges, members of the community picked out by the senior center, will judge each of the pies.
Only one pie per name is allowed in the contest. The name and phone number must be placed under the pie plate.
Pat McDowell, administrative assistant at the center and coordinator of the peach pie contest, said this contest is open to anyone interested.
“It’s not just for the seniors,” she said. “It’s open to the entire community.”
Rules of the contest are the pies must be homemade with fresh peaches. Graham cracker crusts and cream cheese, Jell-O or gelatin-based fillings will be disqualified.
McDowell said the judges are first shown the pie. The pie is cut in a slice, and then into small pieces that each judge gets to eat. The judges then rate each pie on a scale of 1 to 4 on the basis of crust, appearance, taste and texture. Any ties will be taste-tested again of both the whole pie and the slice.
“[We get] usually anywhere around 10 to 20 pies,” McDowell said. “The average is about a dozen pies.”
First place winner of the contest receives $50, second place receives $35 and last place receives $25.
“It’s going to be fantastic,” McDowell said. “It’s always fun.”
Residents can submit pies to the senior center until 10 a.m. on Aug. 16, but McDowell said the senior center prefers the application forms come in as early as possible.
“We’d like to have a head count of how many pies we have,” she said.
Forms can be picked up at and submitted to the senior center at 300 S. Scott St. For more information, call 378-4758.
