Middletown police say a medical emergency caused a city man to crash into an apartment building on Friday morning.

Douglas Delgado, 43, of Middletown, was driving a 2011 Subaru Outback out of the Middletown Crossing Shopping Center and turning onto Route 299 at about 9:29 a.m. Friday when a medical condition caused him to leave the roadway, a report said. Delgado’s vehicle crossed the roadway and over a grassy area before crashing into the side of an apartment building in the 300 block of Hampstead Road.

Delgado was briefly trapped in his vehicle before being rescued by Middletown Volunteer Fire and Hose, police said. He was taken to Christiana Medical Center, where he was treated for minor injuries and was scheduled to be released.

Tenants were inside the apartment when the SUV entered a brick wall of a rear bedroom. No one was in the room and no one was injured. According to a report, the tenants were relocated after a code enforcement officer ruled the building unsafe.

Delgado was not charged.
