Monthly classes at the Evolution Karate Academy, 735 N. Broad St., Middletown will be held July 14 and Aug. 11 from 6:30-8:30 p.m.
Some good self-defense techniques can always come in handy, especially this time of year, when walking to our destinations on a warm summer night is so tempting. Unfortunately, in today’s world, danger could be lurking around any corner, waiting to turn a fun night into disaster. That is where Don Melnick and his Krav Maga comes in.
What is Krav Maga you may ask? Krav Maga is a form of self-defense that focuses on getting out of a life-threatening situation fast.
Melnick, a self-defense instructor, owns a studio up in Cherry Hill New Jersey, where he teaches Krav Maga, but decided to expand his teachings to Middletown three years ago.
Now he teaches monthly classes at the Evolution Karate Academy, located at 735 N. Broad St.
His next lessons will be July 14 and Aug. 11 from 6:30-8:30 p.m.
“We aren’t about competition, we are about helping people get out of a bad situation quick,” Melnick said. “Because we don’t focus on competition, most of the moves we would demonstrate would be illegal to use in tournaments.
“If you are in a bad situation, it isn’t about following the rules. It is about getting you out of there as quickly and as safely as possible.”
Melnick hopes that his classes will be able to help keep his students and their family members safe, not just for their summer fun, but year-round.
He is also planning to increase the frequency of his Middletown Krav Maga classes later this summer, due to the popularity of the classes.
“The classes are actually pretty popular,” Melnick said. “Class sizes vary a bit, but we have quite a few regulars, and then normally a couple others that slide in and out. We can have up to 10 to 15 people a class.”
He said the plan to offer more classes relied on making Josh Kite, the man helps Melnick run the Middletown program, an affiliated instructor.
“Josh has been training with us for over three years, so we are hoping we can get him set up as an affiliate. That way he can take over the program,” Melnick said. “Hopefully he can teach it a couple days a week, and find days that are a little better for people than Fridays.”
