Middletown High senior David Huegel was voted Blue Hen Conference Flight A soccer player of the year by coaches. He also made first-team all-state and was the fifth highest vote getter in Delaware.
“His tactical sense is his best attribute, making decisions under pressure that allow the team to keep possession of the ball,” MHS coach Brian Derrickson said via email. “This year, David was a leader by example, always working hard and going the extra step to make himself and his teammates better. It has been an honor to have watched Dave develop throughout his high school years.”
Senior forward Kevin Knox also made first team all-Blue Hen and was a second team all-state representative pick. He scored seven goals in the regular season, made six assists and became the Cavs best forward this season.
“With his ability to get into opposing defenses with quickness and agility, Kevin has developed through his years here into a very strong threat to opposing goalkeepers,” Derrickson said. “His approach to the game is simple and to have fun and play hard, a formula that has worked wonders for him and allowed our team to grow and be successful along the way.”
Making second team all-Blue Hen were Justin Oduaran and Biagio Tocci. Ben Ross was an honorable mention selection.
Oduaran made second team all-state representative as a defender.
“Playing in the back after the first three games, Justin quickly excelled at his new found position,” Derrickson said. “Scoring four goals this season, Justin’s ability to get forward with speed and agility proved difficult for defenses to adjust to.
“A great student first, Justin became the versatile player we needed to complete a successful season.”
Derrickson had this to say about Tocci, an outside midfielder:
“Biagio has played almost everywhere during his four years at MHS. Possibly our best player with ball, but with an unselfishness that has bled into his teammates play. He is a strong decision-maker, winning balls and starting attacks or servicing balls in flight that the opponent is not prepared for. BJ has been a coach’s player, never getting upset or betraying his teammates. His display or character has been unquestioned in his high school career, something he can be very proud of and his coaches lucky to have been a part of.”
