The Diamond State Base Ball Club, Delaware’s 19th Century base ball team, has announced its 2010 schedule of vintage base ball matches. The 2010 season will mark the Diamond State BBC’s second year of play, following the startup campaign in 2009.
The Diamond State BBC is based upon a team of the same name, one of the first known amateur baseball teams organized in Delaware. Formed in 1865, the original club played in Wilmington from 1865 until the mid-1870s and was the preeminent amateur team in the state at the time. The modern Diamond States wear uniforms replicating those worn by the original ball club and play according to baseball rules and customs of the mid-1860s, utilizing reproduction equipment. The club’s vintage base ball matches are a blend of athletic competition and living history exhibition.
2010 also marks the second season that Diamond State will participate in the Mid-Atlantic Vintage Base Ball League (MAVBBL), a league it helped found in 2009. Other clubs in the MAVBBL include: the Flemington Neshanock BBC (N.J.); the Eclipse BBC of Elkton (Md.); the Dauntless BBC of Havre de Grace (Md.); the Chesapeake Nine (Baltimore, Md.); the Fair Play BBC of Talbot County (Easton, Md.); and the Potomac Nine (Washington, D.C.) New MAVBBL entries for 2010 include: the Elizabeth Resolute BBC (N.J.), the Athletic BBC of Philadelphia (Pa.); the Excelsior BBC of Arundel (Md.); and the Pastime BBC of Williamsburg (Va.)
Seven home matches, seven road matches, two tournaments, and one festival highlight the 2010 Diamond State schedule. The home schedule features six matches at Fort DuPont State Park and one on Pea Patch Island at Fort Delaware State Park, all in Delaware City.
Home matches at Fort DuPont include: the Saturday, April 10 opener against the Resolute BBC; Sunday, July 25 against the Dauntless BBC; Sunday, Aug. 8 versus the Chesapeake Nine; Sunday, Aug. 29 against the Athletic BBC; Sunday, Sept. 26 versus the Excelsior BBC; and the season finale on Sunday, Oct. 10 versus the Dauntless BBC.
Diamond State will also play a special home match on Pea Patch Island on Sunday, June 13 as part of Fort Delaware’s second annual Victorian KidsFest on the island. The opponent that day will be the Diamond State’s chief rival, the Eclipse BBC. Match time will be determined at a later date.
