COMMENTARY: A few quick-hitting thoughts

Just a few quick thoughts when nothing deep comes to mind this week.
HOW ABOUT IT: One insightful sports fan recently emailed to express how unimpressed he was with my Jan. 7 Colts-Saints Super Bowl prediction. The logic was that picking the No. 1 seeds was too boring and easy. Now that’s the type of chops-busting I can live with.
NICE JOB, LADIES: Here’s a little extra credit for the Middletown High girls basketball team, which pushed toward .500 despite having a roster full of players without significant varsity experience before this season. First-year coach Melvin Mayo deserves mention for a job well done, and here it is.
I LIKE IT: Congratulations to local high school stars Giff Timothy (Clemson-bound), Cameron Thomas (Western Kentucky) and Brandon Cheaton (Delaware), who this week planned to sign letters of intent to attend college and play football. They all seem like good guys, and deserve the opportunity to enter a whole new world of opportunity.
WE’LL SEE: National college football signing day and the NFL draft kind of remind me of each other. No matter how many accolades come attached to the hot new prospects, there’s just no telling how they will pan out at the next level of competition. Some guys you’ve never heard of will become megastars, and some incoming megastars will be unqualified flops. You just never know.
Think about it – there was great debate whether Ryan Leaf or Peyton Manning should be the Colts top pick in 1998. Well-paid scouts who have forgotten more football than most of us will ever know couldn’t decide who the better quarterback. The NFL draft is that much of a crapshoot, and I’ll lump in college football recruiting classes in the same great realm of the unknown.
SCOUT STUFF: A recent presentation to Cub Scouts pushing the virtues of being a newspaperman went well. The guys were mostly well-behaved, and I’ll take that any time in an audience of first-graders.
The biggest hit of the night was with the parents, though. They loved my favorite Christmas gift that the lovely Mrs. Anderson found on E-Bay – a yellowed Aug. 9, 1974 edition of The Washington Post that led with the massive “Nixon Resigns” headline. It cost 15 cents back in the day, but goes for $25 or so now.
TIGHT SQUEEZE: Ever notice how you can always squeeze a dab of toothpaste out of a seemingly empty tube? How is that possible?
