Fewer Delawareans will hit the road this weekend, mirroring a national trend in decreased Fourth of July car travel.
More than 99,500 Delawareans are expected to travel 50 miles or more from home this weekend, which is nearly a 2 percent decline over last year’s holiday, according to AAA MidAtlantic.
Car travel is expected to drop 2.4 percent in the First State, but the number of Delawareans traveling by air will be up 6.4 percent, AAA reported.
Gas prices play a major role in many people’s decisions not to drive and June 29’s statewide average is $2.57 a gallon, according to AAA. But that figure pales in comparison to last year, when a gallon of gas cost $4.03.
The average Delawarean will travel 715 miles roundtrip during the weekend and the average traveling household will spend $1,293 during the holiday, AAA reported.
Nationally, Fourth of July travel is down nearly 2 percent as 37.1 million Americans prepare to hit the road.
