Obit: Viola Margaret (Donovan) Chillas

Viola Margaret (Donovan) Chillas, age 97 of Middletown, DE, passed away peacefully at home with her family on Monday, December 12, 2011. 

Mrs. Chillas was born December 20, 1913 in the Frederica-Milford area known as Milford Neck.  She was the daughter of the late Russell J. and Annie T. Donovan. 

Viola graduated from Milford High School and Goldey Business School in Wilmington.

Mrs. Chillas was employed as the secretary to the sales manager with Associated Wilmington Laundries, Inc.  After moving to Middletown she became a broker with Commercial Insurance Realty, and later J.A. Montgomery, Inc. until 1982 when she retired.

Viola worked at the Board of Elections for many years. She enjoyed taking friends to doctor visits, shopping, caring for her family, tatting, sewing and gardening.  She was also a member of the Volunteer Hoses Company of Middletown Ladies Auxiliary.

She was a member of Bethesda United Methodist church for 56 years.  She served as financial secretary 22 years, assisted and baked for their bazaars and suppers, taught church school, and later served on the worship memorial fund committee, prayer chain, and she enjoyed making ugly quilts for the homeless.  She was honored in April, 2011 for her years of service to the church by the Wilmington District Laity Clergy.

Mrs. Chillas enjoyed traveling with the Jean Birch MOT Senior Center and other groups.

She was preceded in death by her husband, David Chillas, Sr.; nephew, Christopher Whaley; granddaughter, Elizabeth “Beth” Chillas; and her sister, Ethel E. Littleton and her husband, Walter.

She is survived by her son, David D. Chillas, his wife, Leta and grand-dog, Lilly of Middletown; granddaughters, Amy Chillas Truitt and Carol Chillas Stone and her husband, Rod A. Stone; great-grandchildren, Nathaniel Holmes and his wife, Maria, Natasha Holmes and her companion, Kevin Kilpatrick, Nolan Holmes, Newell Stone and Olivia Stone and great-great-grand-daughters, Aurora Holmes, Paige Marker and Joe’lee Holmes.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. on Friday, December 16 at Daniels & Hutchison Funeral Home LLC, 212 N. Broad Street in Middletown, where friends may visit with Viola’s family from 10 -11 a.m.  Interment will be held privately in Union Hill Cemetery in Kennett Square, PA.

In lieu of flowers, Mrs. Chillas requested to please send contributions to the Viola D. Chillas Memorial Fund at the Bethesda United Methodist Church, 116 E. Main St., Middletown, DE  19709.
