George Arthur Eberhard, Jr., 92, of Pinellas Park, FL and formerly of Middletown, DE passed away on Thanksgiving Day, November, 24, 2011, in St. Petersburg, FL of pneumonia after suffering a hip fracture.
He was born in Longwoods, MD on May 16, 1919, son of the late Rosalena (Plugge) and George A. Eberhard, Sr.
On September 14, 1944, he married Ruby Wimmer and together they were blessed with two children. He and Ruby spent many wonderful years in Florida; making it his permanent residence in 1986. George was employed by Dravo Corporation during the war, C.W. Hazel & Son in Wilmington, manager of Cole Canning Company in Middletown, DE and was retired from Chrysler Corporation where he worked as a Millwright with Local 1183. He was a Charter member of the Loyal Order of the Moose #1295.
George was a gifted craftsman in woodworking, plumbing and electrical work. He enjoyed touring the country for many years in his motor home, as well as boating, fishing and swimming. In the summer he would travel north to visit family and friends in the Pennsylvania, Clayton and Middletown areas but always travelled back to Florida before it was cold. Quoting him at the time of his move in 1986, he said “I’ll never be cold again.”
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby, in June 1986, as well as by a sister, Gertrude Adams of Federalsburg, MD in June 2003.
George is survived by his two children, Gary (Diane) Eberhard of Clayton, DE and Deborah (Paul) Harmon of Pottstown, PA; four grandchildren, Scott and Laurie Eberhard and Jeffrey (Tammy) and Gregory Harmon; two great-grandchildren, Tyler and Drew Mote, as well as by a sister, Dorothea Schreppler (Charles) of Middletown, DE.
Funeral services were held 1on Saturday, December 3 at Daniels & Hutchison Funeral Home LLC, 212 N. Broad Street in Middletown, where friends visited with George’s family from 10:30 – 12:00 noon. Interment followed at The Church of the Brethren Cemetery of Mechanic Grove, 1392 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville, PA.
