While the Appoquinimink High School girls basketball team boasts arguably the best guard tandem in Delaware in Amani Clark and Ashley Smith, they also have two forwards who make life miserable for their opponents in the paint.
Sophomore Amber Cale scored a game-high 15 points and junior Taylor Bond added 11 as the Jaguars kept their perfect Blue Hen Conference Flight A record intact with a convincing 62-36 win over Concord Friday night.
“We tell the girls to keep shooting because a missed shot is just like a pass with Taylor and Amber down there,” Appo coach Daniel Pasani said. “That’s the beauty of our team. We have so many girls who can score points for us and those two really got after it tonight.”
“It’s nice because we all play to each other’s strengths and weaknesses,” Bond said. “My job and Amber’s job is to rebound, play defense and block shots.”
“Those are key components of our game,” Cale added. “Defense wins games and offense sells tickets.”
Fortunately for those who paid admission, Cale, Bond and the Jaguars (9-1 overall, 5-0 Flight A) provided plenty of both and led by double digits for most of the contest. Smith scored eight of her 11 points in the first quarter to help Appo gain a lead they wouldn’t surrender the entire game. Clark joined Cale, Bond and Smith in double figures with 14 points as Appo won their fifth straight game.
A battle with fellow Flight A unbeaten Charter School of Wilmington is on tap for Thursday, but Pisani knows the focus will be on Glasgow Tuesday night.
“In Flight B last year, we may have gotten up for Hodgson and that was it. In Flight A, every night is a battle for us,” Pisani said. “Glasgow is a tough team and we have to be ready for them on Tuesday.”
