St. Georges, Del. —
For a third period stretch, the St. Georges Tech boys basketball team looked like they were going to overcome a large Howard High lead and keep their six-game homecourt winning streak alive.
Instead the Hawks made uncharacteristic turnovers and couldn’t find the range late as the Wildcats ended their home winning streak with a 70-64 decision Tuesday night.
“You have to give Howard credit,” Hawks head coach John French said. “They took us out of our game. We played Hawk basketball in the third quarter but then we started making too many mental mistakes.”
The Wildcats led 34-20 at halftime, but the Hawks (7-3 overall, 3-2) Flight B went on a scorching 17-2 run to start the third quarter, ending with a Donte McGill (18 points) three-pointer to give St. Georges it first lead since a 5-4 advantage early in the first quarter.
“We had to get our defensive pressure up and get some stops,” said senior guard Raymond Anderson, who led St. Georges with 22 points.
The Hawks’ lead was short-lived as Howard went on a 16-4 burst in a five minute stretch to take a 52-41 lead 30 seconds into the fourth quarter and the Hawks could never really recover.
“It’s really frustrating because I think they’re like one out of the last seven against us,” Anderson said of St. Georges’ previous spell over Howard. “We’re just going to have to fix it in practice and get ready for our next game.”
“Howard came in our house and took care of business and we didn’t,” French said. “It’s not the end of the season, we’re just halfway through, we’re 7-3 and the second half of our season begins next week.”
