Life has been a whirlwind over the last three years for contemporary Christian music artist Francesca Battistelli.
Professionally, she has had two albums reach No. 1 on the Billboard Christian albums chart, and a collection of singles get significant radio airplay. She has also married and started a family.
“It’s interesting because I think my professional career and personal life has sort of been on a fast track and have been going together at the same time,” Battistelli said in a recent telephone interview. “We got married and had our little boy in 2010 and just had our little girl a few weeks ago.”
Luckily, Battistelli’s husband — Matt Goodwin of the Christian band NewSong — has helped on the personal side. The couple welcomed their second child, a daughter, into the world in August.
“It’s been wonderful to kind of go through this with my husband. Matt is a huge blessing, and I don’t think I could have done it without him. Because it has been a whirlwind. Just a lot has happened in a short period of time,” Battistelli said.
Learning as she goes
Battistelli first got the itch to perform after seeing a Broadway performance. This itch has turned into a successful career in Christian music.
She first garnered attention in 2008 upon the release of “My Paper Heart,” which included several hit singles such as “Free To Be Me” and “I’m Letting Go.” The album topped the Billboard Christian albums chart.
“I think there was something special about that record. ‘Hundred More Years’ definitely made people go, ‘Oh! OK. I still like her.’ And I hope the next record is even better than those two,” Battistelli said.
Battistelli is embarking on her first headlining tour. Previously she was usually a supporting act, so the tour’s organization, logistics and other aspects are new to her.
“It’s exciting. It’s interesting to be on this side of it for the first time,” she said.
Battistelli says she enjoys challenging herself to take things to the next level of her career.
“See how much you can do, how much you can work. It’s interesting, it’s great,” she said.
When Battistelli made her first album she had all the time in the world to record it. Now her daily whirlwind affects her process, even more so as she starts writing for a new album in the midst of her first headlining tour.
“I feel a lot of it is that I have to be more intentional about my songwriting,” Battistelli said. “As far as it affecting the content, I think that I am writing about my life, autobiographically ... I really try to write from the heart and honestly.”
She says she still hasn’t figured out how to balance work and family now that she has two children, but that she is learning as she goes.
“I feel when I am home ... ‘Oh! I’m just a mom.’ But I still own a business and have to work full time, though it’s flexible. But ... there is so much to be done and that time to be creative is not easy,” Battistelli said.
Even with the tricky balance she is now learning between work and family in the midst of a tour and songwriting, she said it remains an honor to make music and write songs that connect and affect people on a spiritual level.
“To really feel like what I am doing is having an impact on people’s lives, helping them get through difficult times ... it’s overwhelming sometimes. Because it’s so beyond me and beyond what I can do,” she said. “It’s so obviously God.”
