Catcher Quincy Waite absorbed a collision and tagged a runner at home plate for the final out, and second-year varsity program Appoquinimink High qualified for the DIAA State Baseball Tournament championship game with a 9-8 win over Caesar Rodney Saturday at Frawley Stadium.

The No. 14 seed Jaguars continued their string of thrilling finishes, and will now play in Tuesday's 7 p.m. state final at Frawley. Appo (16-5) meets No. 4 Caravel (16-5). AHS earlier snared tense wins over No. 3 seed Charter School of Wilmington and No. 6 St. Georges Tech to advance.

Led by the big bats of Quincy Waite, Armando Estrada, Dan Anderson, Chris Buckley, Rob Margis, Blair Tunell and DeVante Parker, AHS scored in every inning but the fourth and fifth.

Estrada labored at times, but was the winning pitcher after a seven-inning effort. Caesar Rodney loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh, but the game ended with a double play. Second baseman fielded a bouncer and Parker threw to shortstop Connor Stevens to make a force out, and Stevens threw home to Waite to nail a second runner and end the game.
