A retired New Castle County police officer is the newest member of the New Castle County Vocational Technical School District Board of Directors.

Renee C. Taschner, 47, of Newark, was selected by Gov. Jack Markell to serve a seven-year term, which she took an oath for Dec. 19.

“New Castle County Vo-Tech has an outstanding reputation for doing positive things for students,” Taschner said.  “I consider it an honor to have been selected by the Governor to serve with the other members of this well-respected board, to continue with the good work they are doing.”

She fills the seat formerly held by retired Colonial School District Superintendent Ray Christian, who died in September.

Taschner began her career in public service as a Delaware State Police dispatcher. She graduated from the New Castle County Police Academy in 1988, and served on the force until her retirement in 2004.

She has been living in Delaware for more than 30 years and is a graduate of Dickinson High School. She earned a degree in Criminal Justice and Police Science from Delaware Technical Community College and has served as treasurer and secretary for the Fraternal Order of Police.

She is also a member of and chaplain for the New Castle County Police Alumni Association.

There are seven members on the Vo-Tech board.
