RelyLocal Newark, a shop local/buy local campaign, is excited to announce the first ever Cash Mob to take place on Main Street in the city of Newark, Del. The community event is scheduled for Tuesday, April 10 at 6:30 p.m. Those interested in participating should arrive a few minutes early and meet in the lobby of the Main Street Galleria, located at 45 E. Main Street, Newark, DE 19711.
Cash mobs are groups of people who assemble with cash in hand ready to spend at an unannounced local business. The chosen business will have buying options appealing to all demographics. The purpose of cash mobs is to support both local businesses and the overall community. The concept was inspired by the fad of flash mobs. Unlike flash mobs, which, in some instances, had turned violent and resulted in theft and damage to small businesses, the idea of a cash mob is to show support and put money into the registers of local business at a time they need it most.
The rules of the cash mob are simple: Show up promptly at 6:30 p.m. to receive directions to the business to be “mobbed.” Bring at least $10 that you pledge to spend at the business. Have fun.
“Cash Mobs are taking the buy local concept to the next level,” said Stephen Orens, owner of RelyLocal Newark, and organizer of the first Newark mob.  “We hear the benefits of supporting local business and the local economy all over the media.  Now is the time, as a community, to take action and show our local businesses that we are there for them.”
