The Women's Club of Odessa saw a great turnout for its annual "Christmas in Odessa" tours earlier this month, netting enough money to fund several causes this coming year.
Much to the pleasure of the Women's Club of Odessa, five tour buses of out-of-town tourists joined hundreds of other visitors for "Christmas in Odessa" earlier this month.
"The weather was just perfect," said club member Jane Martin. "We've had snow, rain and wind before but we were pleased with all the sunshine, even if it was a bit cold."
Last week's unexpected snowfall forced the club to forgo its usual post-tour meeting but, based on the preliminary numbers, event co-chair Mary Homan is pleased with the numbers. She estimates that more than 1,300 people came through for the tour, helping the organization to raise nearly $30,000.
"It's 12 months' worth of work but it's still a good amount of money for one day," Homan said on Tuesday. "It gets spent pretty quickly, though. We'll give out five $2,000 scholarships and we've made commitments to other charities as well. Plus, a good bit of it goes to the maintenance of Old St. Paul's Church."
