A man crashed his vehicle into a utility pole in Odessa bringing the southbound lanes of U.S. route 13 to a halt yesterday.
The incident occurred on May 3 at approximately 12:07 p.m. on north Sixth Street (U.S. Route 13) southbound at High Street in Odessa, just north of Del. Route 299.
According to Delaware State Police, the driver of the vehicle, John Mathews, 68, of Wilmington, was operating a 2007 Ford Express construction van and drove off the roadway which struck a Delmarva utility pole. The pole was on the right side of southbound U.S. Route 13 approximately 200 feet north of Del. Route 299.
The driver appeared to have suffered a medical event and was flown by the Delaware State Police Aviation Unit to the Christiana Hospital in Newark.
The southbound lanes of U.S. Route 13 in the area of the crash were closed for Delmarva Power Company to complete the repairs and traffic was rerouted to Marl Pit road to Del. Route 299.
