Delaware State Police is currently investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash that occurred on Summit Bridge Road north of Marl Pit Road around 2:54 p.m. on Saturday, July 11.

According to the preliminary investigation, a 66-year-old male from Newark was driving a 2013 Ford Edge northbound on Summit Bridge Road (U.S. Route 301) approaching the intersection of Marl Pit Road. For unknown reasons the Ford Edge drifted across the solid double lines and into the southbound lanes. Stephanie L. Macadam, 44 of Baltimore, Maryland, was driving a 2014 Ford C-Max Hybrid southbound approaching the same intersection and attempted to swerve to the right to avoid colliding with the Ford Edge, but was struck nearly head-on before both vehicles came to an uncontrolled stop in the southbound lanes.

The 66-year-old male was properly restrained and was extricated from the vehicle by mechanical means. He was then transported by New Castle County Emergency Medical Services to Christiana Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead. The name of the operator is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Macadam and her 16-year-old daughter were also properly restrained and had to be extricated from their vehicle by mechanical means. They were both transported from the scene by the Delaware State Police Aviation Unit to Christiana Medical Center where Macadam remains hospitalized in serious condition with undetermined injuries. Her daughter was also admitted in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries.

The Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing their investigation into this crash. Summit Bridge Road was closed between Marl Pit Road and Boyds Corner Road for approximately two hours while the incident was investigated and cleared.
