Q What’s your mindset when you perform at an inaugural festival, compared to a festival that’s already been established?
A I love new challenges and I love new things, so I’m just excited to be part of this festival because it’s so new. I think it’s just going to be cool to see the new fans there. It’s going to be a different group of people and a different crowd to win over, so I’m up for it.
Q You’re going to bring your single “For a Boy” to Delaware. How did that song come about?
A I dated this guy and it just didn’t work out. We were better [off] as friends. Anyway, he took me out to dinner one night and was basically just pouring his heart out to me and telling me he was sorry and he kind of wanted to figure things out again. On my way home from that dinner, I was talking to my mom and was like, “Well mom, he was good at saying sorry. And for a boy, he was really wearing his heart on his sleeve. For a boy, I just really believe in him.” Before I knew it, I was writing my second single.
Q What qualities do you look for in a guy?
A My boyfriend is such a doll. I’ve always liked tall guys. I really like smart and really sweet guys who love God, because I love God so much. That’s definitely a big thing for me. And I want someone who has a good head on their shoulders and knows what they want in life, and they’re not afraid to make me laugh.
Q Your mom is a pastor. In some religious households, any music that’s not Christian isn’t welcomed. How supportive were your parents when you decided to be a country singer?
A I got nothing but support. My grandpa wanted my mom and aunt to be like a country duo, growing up. And we’ve always loved country music as much as we loved Christian music. So it was definitely not something they were hesitant about. They wanted me to do it.
Q What’s the best advice you’ve received from your mentor, Blake Shelton?
A One thing he’s always told me is to always stay true to myself and never let anybody change me or change my voice. He was like, “You have a unique sound and you need to stick to that.”
Q How would you describe your uniqueness and who you are as an artist?
A If Katy Perry and Dolly Parton had a child – I’d be their child. I’m super fun, but also super country and super colorful [laughs].
Q What’s the silliest thing you’ve done or an embarrassing moment from your career?
A When I was on “The Voice” and I found out I made it to the next round, I said “Oh sh*t” on national television. It was the funniest thing ever because everybody knew I was the pastor’s kid.
