Delaware State Police identify pedestrian as Robert Wertz, 43, of Townsend. Driver charged with DUI.
A man from Townsend was the victim of a hit and run in Odessa over the weekend. The incident occurred on Saturday, Oct. 2 at around 2 a.m.
According to Delaware State Police, the pedestrian killed on U.S. Route 13 has been identified as Robert Wertz, 43, of Townsend.
Wertz was walking on Rt.13 near Del. Route 299 in Odessa early on Saturday. Police are still investigating the reason why he was on foot at that time.
Wertz was struck by the front of a 2004 Chevrolet Suburban which was traveling on Rt. 13 in an unknown lane, and which was being driven by Shawn Russell, 40, of Dover.
Russell fled in his vehicle from the scene but was apprehended a short time later by officers from the Smyrna Police Department at the intersection of Route 13 and Smyrna Leipsic Road in Smyrna.
A DUI investigation then ensued at which time Russell was arrested and charged by troopers with DUI, leaving the scene of a fatal motor vehicle crash, failure to report an accident, and no proof of motor vehicle insurance. Arraignment information for Russell is not available at this time.
This crash remains under investigation by the Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit.
