The board of the Blue-Gold All-Star Basketball Games is pleased to introduce the honorees for this year’s game scheduled for March 19. Since its inception in 1999, the board has  recognized local leaders who have made a difference. This year, the event will acknowledge the exemplary work of Rep. Harvey R. Kenton and legendary homegrown boxer Dave Tiberi.

“I have known of Rep. Kenton for many years” stated games founder, Mort Kimmel, “and, in addition to his commitment to the people of District 36 Milford, he has been a champion for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities which makes him the perfect honoree as this event benefits Best Buddies Delaware, an organization whose vision is to build more inclusive communities.”

Kenton has served in the House of Representatives since 2010. He is a member of the Joint Finance Committee and his other legislative assignments have included Agriculture, Appropriations, Education, and Veterans Affairs. Last year’s honoree, John Hollis, had this to say: “The honor of working with Harvey and having his esteemed friendship is of great joy to me and thousands of Delawareans.”

Kenton will be presented with the 2016 Blue-Gold Leadership Award at the annual Blue-Gold All-Star Games Banquet on Thursday, March 17 at the Dover Downs Hotel and Casino.

On game day, March 19 at the Bob Carpenter Center on the campus of the University of Delaware, the Blue-Gold All-Star Games will salute Delawarean Dave Tiberi for his commitment to civic pride and in support of youth in New Castle County. Tiberi may best be remembered for his appearance in the boxing ring versus James Toney in 1992 as the challenger for the IBF Middleweight title. While some may remember the judge’s decision against Tiberi, most recall the dignity with which Dave handled the obviously flawed outcome.

“Dave is an upstanding son of Delaware and we are honored to add him to the list of previous community leaders that we are able to recognize during the Blue-Gold All-Star Basketball Games” says Lawrance S. Kimmel, Esq., Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the annual basketball event. “Following his time in the ring, Dave has made a commitment to youth, to law enforcement and to our great state. It’s a thrill for us to have him join us” concluded Mr. Kimmel.

The Blue-Gold All-Star Basketball Games feature the top 60 senior high school boys and girls players in the state as voted on by their coaches. For the past six years the games have benefited Best Buddies Delaware, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to create one-to-one friendships between people with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities, as well as create leadership and employment opportunities for people with IDD.
