There is a new business in Middletown for parents who want to help their children do better in mathematics.
Mathnasium, a Los Angeles-based math learning center, now has a location at 578 W. Main Street. There are about 400 Mathnasium centers across the U.S. The business uses a proprietary education method for helping children with math. The location in Middletown opened on Aug. 24.
Mathnasium customers are children in second to 12th grades who are having a hard time with math and also those who simply want to improve with the subject, or prepare for standardized tests.
Local resident and businessman Amar Tailor is the owner and director of Mathnasium in Middletown. Tailor and his family have been involved in various businesses in the state for over 38 years. He discovered the math-only learning center online last year when he was looking for a program to help his son with math.
“He was struggling with math a little bit and I started to look at ways to help him and I came across Mathnasium,” Tailor recalled. “I did some research online and went and visited them at their headquarters in Los Angeles and I really connected with their mission – trying to make a difference by helping kids.”
Tailor said that he was very impressed by the fun and interesting teaching methods used by the company.
“It uses a unique combination of mental, verbal, visual, tactile and written techniques to help children really understand math and has been developed over more than 40 years of practical experience with thousands of students,” Tailor said. “Rather than sending children home with additional piles of homework, Mathnasium focuses on teaching children what they need to know while they are present at the center.”
In addition, students at Mathnasium can get help with their homework at the center and can also prepare for standardized tests such as the SAT, Tailor said.
Students that enroll in Mathnasium programs are assessed on their strengths and weaknesses with the subject; they also receive a customized learning plan, and are taught by trained instructors. There are three instructors on staff at the Middletown location.
Though the business has been around only a few months, it has already been getting involved in the community. Most recently, Tailor donated a one-month scholarship for a silent auction held by the Middletown High School wrestling team at a dinner that benefited the non-profit, Autism Speaks.
Tailor said that parents and students should be on the lookout for information about Mathnasium and what it offers at the different school career fairs.
“We are thrilled to be able to bring our Mathnasium Method to the parents and children of Middletown, Odessa and Townsend area,” Tailor said.
