There will be more Toni and Reggie: Season 2 introduced us to a new Reggie Mantle (Charles Melton) and Toni Topaz (Vanessa Morgan), but we'll be seeing even more of these lovelies in Season 3. Now that Toni and Cheryl (Madelaine Petsch) are officially an item and Reggie has been snuggling up to Josie (Ashleigh Murray), there's more room for them to pop into the storyline. Both actors have been promoted to series regulars for Season 3, according to TV Insider.
Archie and Hal Cooper might get a chance to bond in prison: Don't forget Archie isn't the only Riverdale citizen in jail! Hal Cooper (Lochlyn Munro) is also chilling behind bars for his time as the Black Hood. KJ Apa confided to TV Guide that he hopes Archie gets to confront the man who shot his father at the end of Season 1.
"I'd love to see Archie put an end to [the Black Hood storyline], whatever that means, whether it's killing the Black Hood or whatever it is to resolve that situation," Apa told us on the CW Upfronts carpet in May. "I'm anticipating him to hopefully be in prison with Betty's dad, which could be cool."
A New-ish CW: Breaking Down the Network's Fall Schedule
Veronica and Archie are on the rocks: Uh-oh, turns out that when your dad sends your boyfriend to jail for a murder he didn't commit, it doesn't bode well for your relationship. Archie has clearing his name on his plate and Veronica is running Pops and the speak-easy to pay the bills, they're not really going to have time to focus on romance.
But Bughead is solid...at first: Lili Reinhart teased during Riverdale's Comic-Con panel that "Bughead" would be starting out strong and investigating the Season 3 mystery together like they did in Season 1, but things may get bumpier as they get pulled into another dark storyline. They're juniors in high school now so they are starting to think about college and the two could potentially be looking at diverging paths down the line.
Gladys and Jellybean Jones are coming: Aguirre-Sacasa confirmed that Jughead's mom and sister -- Gladys and Jellybean -- are coming to Riverdale. Expect them to arrive in Episode 8 or 9. Casting will be announced closer to the Season 3 premiere.
Jughead's mom might be played by Neve Campbell: Skeet Ulrich has reached out to Neve Campbell about potentially playing Jughead's mom, but the producers would not comment on whether that dream will become a reality. For the record, we support this.
There's another musical episode on the way: After the success of Riverdale's Carrie musical episode in Season 2, there's "definitely" another one coming, according to Aguirre-Sacasa. The very special episode will air in the second half of the season.
There will be a flashback episode about the hot parents: The writers are working on two very special episodes this season, including a flashback episode about the parents of Riverdale in which the younger cast will play their onscreen parents. Aguirre-Sacasa opened up about the flashback episode during the Television Critics Association summer press tour, revealing that it will be the fourth episode of the season.
"[It is] an episode called 'The Midnight Club' which is an Archie version of the Breakfast Club. Obviously the Riverdale version will be much darker. Cami will be playing a young Hermione, Cole will be playing a young FP. KJ will be dying his hair brown and playing a young Fred. We're going to learn about a very, very dark secret in Riverdale since they were in high school."
And it seems the young stars will be taking these new roles very seriously. Accoridng to Madchen Amick, Lili Reinhart has been studying the early seasons of Twin Peaks, in which Amick starred, in order to nail a young Alice.
Serpent initiations are coming: The end of Season 2 saw Cheryl and Betty (Lili Reinhart) officially asked to join the Southside gang, but Cole Sprouse teases that the girls will still have to earn their fangs.
"I don't think it's going to be an easy initiation," he said. "I don't think that Jughead is the kind of leader that will be like, 'Because you're my girlfriend, come on in!'"
Kevin and Josie are living together: Casey Cott and Ashleigh Murray revealed during the Riverdale press meeting at San Diego Comic-Con that Kevin and Josie are roommates now that their parents have moved in together. They'll be singing some duets this season as well as fighting over the bathroom. Aw, they're so close already!

A new threat is coming for Archie: Warner Bros. announced on Sunday, July 22 that they've cast Penelope Ann Miller as Riverdale's new district attorney Ms. Wright. She's looking for a conviction and will paint Archie as a sociopath killer in order to get it -- and it won't be that hard considering how close Archie came to the dark side in Season 2.
Polly is in a cult, and Alice probably is too: The Farm, where Polly escaped when the Black Hood started killing sinners, will get explored in Season 3. Polly has recruited her mother Alice (Madchen Amick) to help heal after the Black Hood was revealed to be Hal Cooper -- their father and husband.
Bughead will find out about Falice: Aguirre-Sacasa also teased at Comic-Con that there will be a very awkward conversation in Episode 3 of Season 3 as Bughead talks to Falice about the implication of their relationship. It's cool as long as Alice and FP don't get married...right?
The first Season 3 trailer: As you can see above, Riverdale Season 3 picks up three months after the events of the Season 2 finale with Archie and the gang getting ready to go back to school. They attempt to have a good Labor Day weekend, but things are already getting weird as Jughead looks distant and Betty starts to get creeped out by her family's involvement with the mysterious "Farm."
Season 3's genre is still TBD: The first season of Riverdale was a murder mystery, while the second was a horror film meets The Godfather mafia story. Executive producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa teased that he's not ready to reveal Season 3's genre yet but it will still fit that "pulp fiction" vibe and will be different from what the show has done before.
Riverdale returns to Wednesdays this fall on The CW.
