Police said the crash occurred Saturday at about 7:10 p.m., on Blackbird Landing Road, two miles east of U.S. Route 13.

A 20-year-old Middletown man died in a pickup truck crash east of Townsend Saturday evening.

Delaware State Police said the crash occurred at about 7:10 p.m., as Tanner Calder, 22 of Townsend, was driving a 2002 Dodge Dakota west on Blackbird Landing Road two miles east of U.S. Route 13.

For unknown reasons, the pickup drifted off the right side of the road and into some mud and tall grass. The vehicle continued to travel west with the right side of the pickup off the roadway and the left side of the vehicle on the roadway.

Then front and undercarriage of the vehicle struck a drainage culvert on Blackbird Landing Road. The vehicle continued and then struck two trees before overturning and landing of its roof.

Calder was flown to the Christiana Hospital Trauma Center by a State Police helicopter and admitted with life-threatening injuries. It is unknown if Calder was wearing his seatbelt.

A passenger in the pickup, Logan Banks, 20, of Middletown, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. Banks was wearing his seatbelt.

The crash remains under investigation by the State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit.

Blackbird Landing Road was closed in both directions for about 2.5 hours while the collision was investigated.
