Twenty local teachers were nominated for the Delaware Teacher of the Year for 2017.

Twenty local teachers were nominated for the Delaware Teacher of the Year for 2017.

The nominees are: Sarah Bateman, Nikki Bean, Erin Brennan, Vincent Colombo, Melissa Dawson, Emily Edmonds-Eveland, Holly Golder, Melissa Grise, Dennis Haley, Julie Hickman, Michele Johnson, Kristen Jones, Jennifer McCutchan, Heather Melvin, Melissa Rapp, Kristin Roberts, Olivia Suchanec, Wendy Turner, James Weiler and Jermaine Williams.

The nominees were selected from 9,000 public school teachers in the state and each represents one of the 19 school districts and charter school networks. The winner will be announced at the awards banquet at 5 p.m. Oct. 25 at Dover Downs Hotel and Casino, 1131 N. Dupont Highway.

Each nominee submitted a portfolio exemplifying their teaching philosophy. Five Delaware Department of Education staff members evaluated each portfolio. A former state Teacher of the Year and a member of the department staff also observed each candidate’s classroom.

The state winner will become Delaware’s nominee in the national program. The Delaware Teacher of the Year will receive a $5,000 grant for their students and a personal grant of $3,000. All nominees will receive a $2,000 grant from the state. Voya Financial also will award a $5,000 gift for the state winner this year.
