Delaware State Police say Michael Z. McGirr, 27, died at the scene.
Delaware State Police investigators believe excessive speed was a factor in a late night crash that took the life of a Dover man.
Division spokesman Master Cpl. Jeffrey R. Hale said the crash took place at about 10:33 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 29 south of Townsend.
The driver of a 1999 Honda Accord, identified as Michael Z. McGirr, 27, was headed southbound on U.S. Route 13 south of Blackbird Forest Road when it went off the left side of the roadway, spun around and hit a tree on its left side.
McGirr, who was wearing a seatbelt, died at the scene, Hale said. It is not yet known if alcohol or drugs also may have contributed to the crash, he added.
The incident remains under investigation by the DSP’s Collision Reconstruction Unit, Hale said.
