Cancer survivors will be the featured models in a fashion show on Saturday, Dec. 10, at Middletown’s Hampton Inn, for Delaware’s Cancer Support Community’s “Catwalk for a Cause.”

Jan Biddle-Shallcross, the Kent County Director for the Cancer Support Community, created the fashion show in 2015 as a way to reach to the Middletown community. After a successful run, it was decided to make “Catwalk for a Cause” an annual event.

“We thought that a fashion show would be a great way for outreach into the community and to highlight some of our survivors as runway models,” said Special Event Coordinator Mic Carlton. “The event and the models were so inspiring last year that it was event that we feel we would love to continue doing every year.”

Ray Failing, Marie Carey, Allix Bednarcik, and Dinah Screeven are just four of the cancer survivors participating in the event. Failing and Bednarcik survived bouts with thyroid cancer, while Carey and Screeven are survivors of breast cancer.

The Cancer Support Community hosted a ribbon cutting for their Middletown venue, located on 81 S. Broad St., back on Aug. 2. There they have a variety of programs such as, yoga, tai chi, meditation, and nutritional classes along with support groups.

The proceeds from “Catwalk for A Cause” will go directly to funding those programs at the Middletown location.

“Last year we raised $3,700,” noted Carlton. “This year we hope to raise $5,000. To put that in perspective, if we reach our goal this year, we would be able to pay for three months of programs in the MOT area.”

Several local businesses have come out to support the event, offering their products or their services.

“Bel Boutique and Nicole J Boutique will be dressing our models,” Carlton said. “While Eco centric Salon has donated their time and will be doing the models’ hair and makeup for the event.”

In addition to Bel Boutique and Nicole J Boutique, Sam’s Club will be donating items towards the dessert bar, while the Painted Stave Distillery will be donating Bloody Marys. Fulton Bank has also joined on as a sponsor of the event.

Tickets are on sale on the Cancer Support Community’s website at, under the special events tab. Tickets are $35 in advance, and $40 at the door.
