1777 General George Washington placed a contingent of troops along the Brandywine River in Wilmington near Lovering Avenue and Broom Street to protect the flour mills from British raids.

1959 The Swedish freighter Svenskund struck the Reedy Island Bridge near Delaware City causing the bridge's closure to highway traffic for several months.

1993 A large portion of State Route 1 from Dover to the Smyrna area opened to traffic.

2000 The state added a protected area of some 5,800 acres around the Nanticoke River area.
