1861 Henry Dickinson of Mississippi unsuccessfully tried to coax the Delaware Legislature to secede from the Union.

1872 The Delawarean newspaper in Dover reported the coldest weather in 50 years. Since Christmas, horses and wagons had crossed the ice covered Delaware River from Delaware City to Pea Patch Island.

1993 After Lt. Gov. Dale Wolf succeeded Gov. Castle and moved into the governor's mansion Woodburn in Dover, his vacant house in Centerville was burglarized.

2001 Ruth Ann Minner became Delaware's first female governor.
