The winner of Willey Farms Vegetable Soup Cook Off Competition held Feb. 11 was Dan Semenick, of Smyrna.

His winning recipe was Maryland hearts of palm soup.

The seven participants were nonprofessional home cooks, and their soup was judged on appearance, taste, texture, aroma and adherence to the theme of vegetable soup.

As the winner, Semenick took home a $100 gift card to Willey Farms. Joyce Lockard, of Elkton, placed second and took home a $50 gift card; and Annette Schwatka, of Townsend, placed third and took home a $25 gift card.

Judges for the event were George Schreppler, of Schreppler Chiropractic; Old State Elementary School Principal Rene Nolan; and Chris Duff, from 99.5 WJBR. There was a group on hand to watch the judging take place and anyone who wished, could taste the soups after the judging was complete.

The winning recipe is available at Willey Farms, 4092 Dupont Parkway, Townsend.
