Residents can get a peek April 11 at the new schools that will be built in the Appoquinimink School District.

The presentation of the schematic designs for the new Fairview Campus middle and high schools and the new elementary school in the Whitehall development will be presented at the Board of Education meeting in Odessa at 7 p.m.

The Fairview Campus middle school and high school schematics were originally scheduled to be presented during the March 14 board meeting, but that meeting was canceled so the board moved the presentation to April 11.

“We will be meeting with architectural firms designing Whitehall elementary school (Gilbert Architects) and the Fairview Campus high school and middle school (ABHA and BSA &A),” said Superintendent Matt Burrows.

Burrows explained that the firms hope to have the presentations ready by the April 11 meeting, but cautioned that the size of the Fairview Campus project made the footprint harder to solidify.

“The scope of the Fairview Campus is so much larger, so the design phase takes more time,” Burrows said. “We spent more than a week listening to educators and staff talk about their ideas for these schools. While everyone agrees that it was a great process, it created an enormous amount of feedback that the design team has had to work through.”

Despite the uncertainty of the Fairview Campus design phase, Burrows said he was satisfied with how plans are progressing.

“I think the primary elements have all been identified, but we’re still discussing the location of some of the major features and have some trimming to do before the middle and high school project is ready to go before the board,” Burrows explained. “The master schedule provides the kind of flexibility needed to accommodate this process and ensure that we stay on time and on budget for construction.”

The master schedule has targeted February to March 2018 as a tentative date for groundbreaking, with the hope of opening in the fall of 2020.
