Releases statement following Trump attack

Sen. Tom Carper released a statement May 23 regarding the Donald Trump administration’s plan to change how Title X family planning funds are awarded — pulling funding from providers that provide or refer patients abortion services.

Carper joined his colleagues in sending a letter to Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar expressing opposition to the implementation of the Title X Domestic Gag Rule.

“Time and time again, we have seen the Trump administration try to limit Americans’ access to affordable health care and erode women’s ability to seek critical medical services, including safe and legal abortions. Today’s announcement is a purely political attack on federally-funded health care centers, where nearly 4 million women and men receive basic preventative health care, including cancer screenings, birth control, sexually transmitted infection screenings, pregnancy testing and well-women exams. All patients — regardless of their zip code or income — should be able to get complete and accurate medical information from their health care provider. If our aim is truly to reduce the number of abortions in this country, this rule is the exact opposite of what we need to be doing. Imposing this gag rule on Title X providers is a blatant attempt to interfere with conversations between patients and their doctors and prevent patients from receiving complete information about their reproductive health care options. Doing so will only punish those who rely on these health care centers and providers and lead to worse health outcomes in this country,” said Carper in the letter with his colleagues.
