Sen. Chris Coons applauded the announcement by the Federal Emergency Management Agency that the Delaware State Fire School will receive an Assistance to Firefighters Grant Award totaling $395,910 for personal protection equipment, extrication equipment and vehicle fire simulators.
“Last week, I had the opportunity to visit the Delaware State Fire School and see firsthand how critical it is that we provide funding for proper training and equipment for Delaware’s firefighters. This Assistance to Firefighters Grant will help ensure that firefighters training at the Delaware State Fire School have the equipment and experience they need to safely respond to emergencies,” said Coons. “I am grateful to the instructors of the fire school for their dedication to the safety of our communities and to all the firefighters who serve our state.”
As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, Coons secured $350 million for Assistance to Firefighter Grants in the Homeland Security appropriations bill, which passed the committee June 21. Coons also co-sponsored S.829, the AFG and SAFER Program Reauthorization Act of 2017, which reauthorizes programs including Assistance to Firefighters Grants through fiscal 2023. This bill was included in H.R.4661, the U.S. Fire Administration, AFG and SAFER Program Reauthorization Act of 2017, which became law Jan. 3.
