Kalmar Nyckel, the “Tall Ship of Delaware,” will return to New Castle for a 13-day visit from Aug. 22 to Sept. 3.
Day, evening and “pirate” sails are offered Aug. 22-29. Advance reservations are recommended, and tickets are available at kalmarnyckel.org/bookasail.asp; on weekdays call 429-7447. The ship will complete her visit with free dockside tours from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 3, Labor Day.
Boarding of the square-rigged ship is at the New Castle town pier.
Kalmar Nyckel is a full-scale replica of the merchant ship that brought Swedish settlers to North America in 1638, to begin establishing the colony of New Sweden — Delaware. Guests are encouraged to haul lines, set sails and enjoy maritime tales of the original Kalmar Nyckel. Two-and-a-half-hour sailing excursions are $60 for adults and $40 for children younger than 17.
In celebration of the ship’s extended visit, the New Castle Community Partnership is working with the Kalmar Nyckel Foundation to offer “same day offers” to passengers. On the day of a sail, attendees can visit Cafe New Castle and Jessop’s Tavern for a 20 percent discount on their meal and drinks; 2nd ACT Antiques is offering 10 percent off items over $20, and Traders Cove Coffee Shop is offering free coffee or latte with specific purchases.
The Kalmar Nyckel Foundation is also partnering with Mix 99.5 WJBR radio to give away a two-night getaway to Historic New Castle with accommodations provided by the David Finny Inn, via Airbnb.
