More than 1,300 participants are expected to take part in the 13th annual 5K Run and Romp to benefit Special Olympics Delaware, set for 7 p.m. Nov. 30 on Academy Street on the University of Delaware campus, Newark.

The 5K, which is held on the same night as Newark’s Winterfest, will take place along a luminary-lit course lined with festive entertainment and activities along the way. New this year is a holiday costume contest open to all race or walk participants.

The course will start and end on Academy Street near the Delaware Avenue intersection and proceed south, winding along several streets to the James Hall trail before heading back up Academy Street to the finish line.

The entry fee for runners and walkers is $30 day-of and includes a long-sleeve event T-shirt, discount coupons for Main Street merchants and post-event refreshments.

The 2017 event had almost 1,500 participants raise $70,000 for Special Olympics Delaware. More than $475,000 has been raised in the 12-year history.
