Delaware State Police said a Dagsboro woman died when her car went off Route 1, down a snow-covered embankment and into a retention pond.

Delaware State Police have released the name of the driver who died in the crash on Route 1 near Townsend Feb. 20 as Jamie L. Powell, 35, of Dagsboro.


A Dagsboro woman died in a crash on Route 1 near Townsend today, Feb. 20, when her car went off the road and slid into a pond.

The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing to investigate the single-car crash that happened at about 1:06 p.m., on northbound Route 1 near New Discovery Road.

The 35-year-old woman was driving a 2016 Hyundai Sonata north on a curve just north of New Discovery Road when she lost control on the snow-covered road.

The car slid off the east edge of the roadway, down a snow-covered grass embankment and into a retention pond. 

The car became completely submerged and the woman couldn't get out.

New Castle County Paramedic Senior Cpl. Ruoy L. Koontz said at 1:12 p.m., emergency crews from New Castle County Emergency Medical Services, the Odessa Fire Company, the Port Penn Fire Company and Delaware State Police responded to the reported crash.

The rescue crews found the car submerged in the water. 

Dive teams removed the woman from the vehicle, and  resuscitation measures were started, Koontz said.

The patient was taken to Christiana Hospital by an Odessa ambulance accompanied by New Castle County Paramedics. She was the only occupant in the car.

Police said the woman was pronounced dead at the hospital. Her name is being withheld until notification of next of kin.
